You can use the AppDynamics tools to manage agents on standalone hosts such as virtual machines, EC2, Azure VMs, and so on.

This enables agent installation at scale. It also enables you to perform mass upgrades and rollbacks.

Supported Operations Agent Management

You can automate the following operations:

  • Installeasily install AppDynamics agents on multiple hosts. There are two ways to install the agents:
    • provide the app, tier, and node names during installation
    • use the installation path to install the AppDynamics agents first and then configure the agents
  • Upgrade—easily upgrade to supported higher versions of the AppDynamics agents. AppDynamics agents are constantly upgraded with new features to provide world-class secure enterprise agents to customers. Hence, we suggest customers upgrade their agents frequently using the tools for agent management. The custom configurations mentioned in the Ansible® role are always carried forward to the upgraded agents.

  • Rollback—In case of unsuccessful or faulty upgrades, you can easily roll back your agents to the previous versions. In addition, all the errors are recorded in a file that will help you eliminate errors in the subsequent upgrades.

The tools for agent management do not support backward compatibility.

We recommend that you update your agents with every release to get the latest agent functionality and fixes. The tools support upgrading the latest agents only. For example, if you are using the agent version 23.1 and the latest version is 23.2, then you must upgrade to 23.2. However, if the upgrade to 23.2 fails due to some reason, you can roll back to 23.1.

You can simplify the agent operations using Ansible.
