Your first step to working with AppDynamics is to create an account. This page gives you an overview of the options for creating an account and how to get started using the AppDynamics Application Performance Management (APM) Platform

    Create an Account

AppDynamics provides both SaaS and on-premises deployment options to fit your data security needs, application workflow, and business environment. Whether you begin with a free trial or register for an enterprise account depends largely on how you intend to use AppDynamics and the type of data you will be monitoring.

Choose an account type and deployment option.

If your business has already determined you have a need for application performance management, you may want to begin with an enterprise account. An AppDynamics customer account manager will work with your organization to systematically determine the proper deployment and configuration for your enterprise. The deployment model governs your next course of action.

    Gain System Access

Every deployment includes a Controller for data collection, a Controller UI for data analysis, and an online customer portal for license and account management. The Controller UI and the AppDynamics.com customer portal require separate and distinct user accounts.

    Controller UI

The Controller sits at the center of an AppDynamics deployment. Agents collect data from a monitored environment and send it to the Controller. The Controller UI is where you can view, understand, and analyze that data.

How you access your controller depends on your deployment. Your account will include a subscription license for each product you purchased during registration. A subscription can have one or more modules and you can have multiple subscriptions, each one having a distinct lifecycle.

    Choose your deployment configuration.

    Install Agents

An AppDynamics deployment consists of multiple application agents to monitor different components in your environment. For installing most types of agents, you can use the Getting Started Wizard in the Controller UI.

Log in to the Controller UI and navigate to Applications > Create an Application > Create an Application using the Getting Started Wizard. Follow the instructions in the Wizard to install agents in your application environment.

    Connect Agents to the Controller

The Getting Started Wizard automatically configures settings for connecting agents to the Controller. If you manually download agents, you must configure the Controller connections. You may need to adjust the configuration of network components, such as firewalls or proxies, to permit traffic from the agent to the Controller. The connection is unidirectional, meaning that agents always initiate the connections to the Controller.

The graphic below shows the connections agents use to reach the platform. The actual connections vary between on-premises and SaaS platforms.

    Roadmap for an AppDynamics Deployment

After you have installed agents and restarted your applications, AppDynamics automatically builds an environment of your application. You can see the model in the dashboards and flow maps view of the Controller UI. The Controller monitors your application workload, determines what is normal for your environment, and applies sensible defaults for detecting abnormal activity and application errors.

You can start using AppDynamics immediately without instrumentation and configuration. Then, at a later date, you can optimize the configuration to make the best use of AppDynamics for your environment and requirements.

The timeline below outlines a typical "Getting Started" journey.

    First Day with AppDynamics

    1. Get a Controller.
    2. Download and install an AppDynamics Agent.
    3. Add users to the Controller UI.
    4. Configure Email/SMS settings to enable notifications. For SaaS, AppDynamics configures the SMTP server. For an on-premises Controller and SMS configuration, see Enable an Email Server
    5. Get to know the AppDynamics defaults, such as built-in health rules and baseline calculations.
    6. Learn about the key performance indicator metrics.
    7. Explore the ways that the different AppDynamics products work together.

    First Week with AppDynamics

    1. Create and organize your business applications.
    2. View and customize flow maps.
    3. Create custom dashboards.
    4. Verify or adjust your tier groups, nodes, and remote services.
    5. Customize your health rules.

    First Month with AppDynamics

    1. Tune your service entry points.
    2. Manage user roles and groups, or connect the Controller to an external authentication provider.
    3. Capture contextual information, information points, and data collectors.
    4. Extend your health rules with custom actions.
    5. Create custom metrics or add integration modules to AppDynamics.
