Dash Studio Layout
Organising the dashboard layout using Dash Studio lets you explore important data about the system. You can find required dashboards, delete dashboards, and create new ones. You can place widgets on the canvas in Responsive mode layout and Fixed Aspect Ratio layout. The canvas is a backdrop where in you can drop the content like widgets.
Dashboard Organization
Create Dashboards
Dash Studio allows you to create a dashboard without having to name it first, or indicate its layout or characteristics. If you accidentally close a dashboard without naming it, the dashboard is saved (see Auto-Save for more information) and is named as Untitled-X. X is the next Untitled dashboard in the collection of dashboards that you are authorised to access and is saved in dashboards creation directory. You can see Untitled-X as the dashboard title on the dashboard screen as soon as the new dashboard canvas loads. You can rename the dashboard as required.
Auto-save
Dashboards are auto-saved by default.
Responsiveness and Sizing
You can resize the Dashboard canvas to any screen size which enables you to switch between editing and viewing mode. By default the dashboard automatically resizes and fits on the screen. The width of some columns in the dashboard are locked so that when you resize a dashboard, locked column is not resized. The default canvas sizing is that of a laptop screen’s dimensions.
Dashboard Editor Actions | Description |
---|---|
Adding Widget | You can drag and drop widgets from the toolbar onto the dashboard canvas. |
Alignment and Placement | The widgets can be placed anywhere on the dashboard canvas, which includes placing widgets on top of other widgets or running off the edge of the canvas itself. The red alignment lines allow quick visual alignment of widgets in a manual fashion. These lines also indicate users when the widgets are at an appropriate distance from other widgets. |
Group Creation | You can select multiple widgets by dragging a box over them with a mouse or holding shift and selecting all widgets by mouse click. |
Selection and Undo/Redo/Copy/Paste | You can select widgets or groups of widgets by clicking them or dragging a mouse-generated box over them by holding down the left mouse button. Multiple widgets can be selected by either dragging the box or by command-click action. Undo/redo action can be accomplished by a toolbar command and also by command-z / command-y functionality on the keyboard. Users can copy, cut or paste groups of widgets by a toolbar command and also using command-c, command-x, or command-v functionality. |
Selection in Edit Mode | You can select widgets or groups in edit mode by clicking them or dragging a mouse-generated box over them by holding down the left mouse button. You can select multiple widgets by either dragging the box or by command-click action. In view mode, data queries are not exposed, only a double-click drills down to the next data level. For widgets: Single click selects a widget, enables moving it, and exposes an editing icon at the top right of the widget. If users want to edit the data they should click on the editing icon. Double-click on the widget should drill down to next data level. Google Data Studio is a good example of this interaction. For groups: Single clicking on a group selects that group, enables moving it, and exposes the editing icon. Clicking again selects the widget being clicked on in the fashion described above. Double-clicking a widget in a group has the same selection effect as clicking once on the group and then clicking on the widget. Users have to double-click again to get to that widget’s drill-down. |
Edit/View
Dashboards can be viewed in two modes:
- Edit mode
- View mode
By default dashboards are in View mode. The toolbar is not displayed in view mode.
